THE KOK RIVER
BARGE & CANOE TRIP – SA 101
Ending in Chiang Rai or back
in Chiang Mai
DEPARTURES FROM CHIANG
MAI : EVERY DAY
Programme Outline – SA 101
This tour programme consists
of 3 distinct phases (1) The trip from Chiang Mai to Ban Pha Tai
by vehicle (2) The trip from Ban Thaton to Chiang Rai by river barge,
and (3) The trip from Chiang Rai to Chiang Mai by vehicle.
All 3 phases can be undertaken
as a one day tour, or you can do just one phase per day over several
days. (with an overnight stop at the end of each particular tour
phase).
Phase 1 - Chiang Mai to Ban
Thaton
- 0630 hrs - Depart your hotel in Chiang Mai
by air-conditioned for the 3 hour trip north to Ban Thaton.
- Take a brief stop at Maekok River Village Resort in Ban Thaton where you may be joined by others undertaking
the trip.
Note* For
those with more time who wish to explore the many attractions between
Chiang Mai & Ban Thaton at a leisurely pace ask you travel agents
about the various one day programmes provided by Track of the Tiger
Tours that will allow you to do this. You would then stay overnight
at your chosen Lodge, Resort, Hotel or Guesthouse in Ban Thaton
(at your own expense) before joining (Phase 2) of the next tour
on the following day.
Note* Those
with a little more time may wish to consider staying overnight at
one of the many hotels. Lodges or guest houses in Ban Thaton. This
way they can explore this interesting border village and it’s surrounding
hill tribe groups before joining the river barge trip (Phase 2)
of the next tour on the following day.
Phase 2 - Ban Thaton to Chiang
Rai Phase
- 1000 hrs - Depart Maekok River Village Resort by vehicle
for the Black Lahu village of Ban Pha Tai, the river barge boarding
point, 25 kms downriver from Ban Thaton.
- 1030 hrs – Depart Ban Pha Tai on a custom
built river barge for the leisurely cruise 70 kms down this scenically
beautiful river to Chiang Rai. The barge travels much of the way
in ‘rafting mode’ (being poled along by two rafts men) and only
uses it’s engine to navigate difficult sections of the river course.
The river runs through bamboo clad gorges and past sleepy hill
tribe settlements where children playing in the shallows are quick
to practice their English word "Hello". Fishermen work the river
with throwing nets, or sit in silent vigil on large rocks watching
for a twitch on their fishing lines that will indicate dinner
has been caught.
- Canoes are provided for those who wish to
explore the river on their own. The barge stops and waits for
the canoeists at pre-arranged points on the river ( every 2 kms
or so and generally at a riverside village which those remaining
onboard may explore).
- Enjoy a Thai or European picnic box onboard
and a swim in the river for the brave.
- Take a tea of coffee break at the Karen village
of Ban Ruam Mit before travelling the last stretch of the river
to Chiang Rai where you disembark at the CR jetty at 1600 hrs.
(Songtaew transport is available at guest expense for those guests
wishing to travel on to a hotel or guest house in Chiang Rai –
or the airport for a flight out).
Note* Those
with a little more time may wish to consider staying overnight at
one of the many Hotels. Resorts or Guest houses in Chiang Rai. This
way they can take a day tour to Burma and the Golden Triangle before
flying out or joining the minibus for (Phase 3) back to Chiang Mai
the following day.
Phase 3 - Chiang Rai to Chiang
Mai.
- 1600 hrs – Board an air-conditioned minibus
for the 4 hour road journey back to your hotel or guest house
in Chiang Mai.
- Take a break and toilet stop at the halfway
point – Wiang Pa Pao.
- Arrive back in Chiang Mai at 2000 hrs
