TYPICAL 7 DAY GEOGRAPHY / ENVIRONMENTAL STUDIES PROGRAMME

Day 1. Sunday

Meal Code: (D)

Arrive in Chiang Mai, either at the airport or the railway station, and transfer by vehicle 25 kms out of the city to your accommodation at the beautiful Suan Bua Resort. The resort is located in the clean air of the hills to the west - some 100 metres above the level of the city.

Check into your accommodation (individual 4 bedroom villas).

Familiarisation lecture on the study location (history, culture, development).

Enjoy a set Thai style dinner then relax around the campfire before retiring to bed.

Day 2. Monday

Meal Code: (B, L, D)

Breakfast in the resort restaurant.

Travel to the isolated town of Samoeng on the opposite side of the Doi Suthep range to Chiang Mai.

Lunch in a local restaurant.

Conduct a 'Quality of Life' survey and an 'Air Pollution study' in Samoeng.

Return to the resort to enjoy a set European dinner.

Submit findings on the day's work.

Retire to bed.

Day 3. Tuesday

Meal Code: (B, L, D)

Breakfast.

Board transport for the trip into Chiang Mai.

Commence a 'Migration study' (in the main tourist business area).

Lunch at a local restaurant.

Commence an 'Urban development' study.

Enjoy dinner in a local western restaurant.

Spend 2 hours exploring the night bazaar.

Board the transport and return to the Suan Bua Resort.

Retire to bed.

Day 4. Wednesday

Meal Code: (B, L, D)

Breakfast.

Check out of the Suan Bua Resort and board minibuses for the trip to Ban Thaton.

Stop to explore the limestone caves at Chiang Dao. Take lunch in a local restaurant.

Then continue north to a rare Paulong hill tribe village. Here, conduct a 'Health study' of the children at the village school.

Continue north to Ban Thaton and check into your chosen type of accommodation at the Maekok River Village Resort on the banks of the Kok river.

Enjoy a mixed Thai / Western food buffet dinner in the 'Spice Garden' overlooking the river.

Relax around the campfire, and enjoy the facilities of 'Bamboo Man Adventure Club'.

Retire to bed.

Day 5. Thursday

Breakfast.

Attend a familiarisation lecture on the study location (local topography, hydrology, geography, the hill tribes & their agricultural practices).

Commence a 'Hydrological study' on the Maekok river.

Return to the resort for a buffet lunch.

Depart for a 'Water pollution study' in the nearby town of Ban Mae Ai.

Return to the resort for a Thai / Western buffet dinner.

Test the water samples – in the student centre laboratory.

Relax around the campfire, and enjoy the facilities of 'Bamboo Man Adventure Club'.

Retire to bed.

Day 6. Friday

Breakfast, then board vehicles to set off for a full day 'Look and Learn' trek. On the trek you visit several hill tribe villages in the area surrounding Ban Thaton.

Take a picnic lunch en route.

Return to the resort in the late afternoon.

BBQ dinner, campfire and 'Jungle Disco' in the 'Bamboo Man Adventure Club'.

10:30hrs retire to bed.

Day 7. Saturday

Breakfast.

Group photograph.

Check out of the resort and depart for the airport/railway station.
