Geography & Environmental studies

The area within and surrounding Ban Thaton is a microcosm of the present situation in Northern Thailand. Through the various academic studies we can provide, many interesting and important issues can be challenged in a unique, hands-on manner. The diverse range of jungle, rivers, urban developments, populations and agriculture in the local area provide an exciting environment in which to learn.

A range of well designed 'work sheets', aimed at different age groups, have been designed for use in the various studies. Samples are available to you on request.

Some of the topics we provide include:

  • Water quality and pollution studies
  • Tourism impact studies
  • Look and Learn trekking
  • Population pressure and health studies
  • Urban Development in Chiang Mai

and many more.

Field studies programmes on science, biology, economics and other subjects are available on request. For further information on these and other subjects, please contact tiger@loxinfo.co.th

Team Building and Leadership Training

Using experiential activities, we provide opportunities for students to gain self-confidence and learn the skills that are crucial to their development. They will learn how to work as a team, whilst developing their leadership, communication, role playing and problem solving skills.

LEVEL 1: Icebreakers

We offer, in a team building park environment, a wide range of excersises designed to let students from different backgrounds, social groups or nationalities, get to know each other. The excersises are designed to ensure the participants have fun.

Example:

The Leaking Pipe

The objective is to retrieve a table tennis ball
from the bottom of a pipe. The pipe is 6 inches in
diametre, 4 metres high and has a number of holes in it at different levels. The ball must be
retrieved by filling the pipe with water while
simultaneously blocking the holes to avoid water from leaking out.

The team is provided with a water hose that does not quite reach the challenge site so aleaking bucket is provided to transfer water from the hose to the pipe.

Teams are awarded points on a scale of 1-10, based on the time taken from start to finish of the exercise.

LEVEL 2: Team Development

These activities build upon the skills gained at the 'icebreaker' level and begin to test the team via situations of intermediate difficulty. Often, leaders emerge during these activities as barriers have been removed.

Example:

The minefield

A 20 litre water bottle is placed within a pile of car tyres stacked three high with just the neck and cap of the bottle showing.

The tyres and bottle are within a 3m x 3m roped square - a 'no go' area. The team is provided with various objects, ropes/bamboo sticks etc. and they must remove the bottle from the square without dropping it in, or letting any member step into the square.

Points are awarded on the time taken to undertake the exercise. Nobody, other than the appointed team leader is allowed to talk during the exercise.

LEVEL 3: Team Work

These are the most challenging activites and really bring out the best (and worst) in students. Roles are often secured within the team by this stage, but this does not mean that success is guaranteed.

The activities require a high degree of decision making, brain storming and planning. Leadership qualities are tested to a great degree, whilst also allowing a great deal of enjoyment.

Examples:

Pole and Tyres

Using 30cm long batons, the team must remove 6 motorcycle tyres from the 4 metre high pole, place them on a small pole, and then reverse the process. The tyres cannot be touched by hand and the tyres cannot touch the poles. Scoring is time-based.

REFLECTION AND DEBRIEFING

This activity is crucial if the team building and leadership training activities are to impact upon the lives of those involved. It is often upon organised reflection and analysis that students begin to understand what they have learnt and how team working can benefit them in the future.

We highly recommend this activity as it provides an effective way of reflecting upon the days events. They can be held after each activity or each day, depending on what you see as suitable.

Community Service

We offer a range of activities that involve the local community. These activities are designed to give students the opportunity to spend time with those who are less fortunate than themselves. They also encourage students to gain a better understanding of those who lead very different lives to themselves and of the problems they face everyday.

The range of community development projects availble at any given time will vary, and we are flexible in developing a project to suit your needs.

MAE AI ORPHANAGE

Students may visit the orphanage and assist in looking after the daily needs of the children, some of whom have AIDS or HIV, have lost their families to the virus or are homeless.

Students may also visit the Mae Ai Old People's Home and assist in looking after the needs of the elderly.

WATER SYSTEM INSTALLATION - HILL TRIBE VILLAGE

Many of the hill tribe villages in the area, living at the higher altitudes, are without access to clean water. In numerous instances, water sources (permanent seeps/streams) within a radius of 2 – 3km of the village could be dammed, and the water piped into holding tanks constructed in the village by means of small diameter flexible piping. Students can be involved in various stages of the project, as dictated by thier available time.

MINOR CONSTRUCTION PROJECTS – classrooms, shower blocks,
playgrounds, water storage tanks, roads etc.

Students may take part in minor construction projects providing basic infrastructural assistnace to projects such as a water system installation for the hill tribe villages or classrooms.

MAEKOK RIVER VILLAGE INITIATIVE

The Initiative involves bringing children from the local orphanage to participate in a 12-month schooling and training course where they will learn about organic farming (in our organic farm), handicrafts (in the custom-built workshops), hotel management and traditional Thai dance.

They will live here and work on the project for 12 months and will leave with a wealth of knowledge. Student groups have the option of spending 2-3 days working on the farm and learning about the benefits of the initiative.

The initiative is planned to be operational in April 2001.

Environmental Study Expeditions and other subjects

Multi task research programmes for the Mae Ai Epidemiological Research Foundation can be arranged by us. The expeditions are open to 'senior level student groups' and 'individual adults' with an interest in geography, ethnographic, ecological, rural socio/economics and the human condition.

Other interest subjects

Thai food cooking classes through the Krua Maekok Thai Food Cooking School, traditional Thai massage courses, an introduction to basic meditation and Tai Chi instruction are available through the student centre.

The Thai Cooking classes are completed in the specially designed teaching kitchen at the Maekok River Village Resort. A course can be designed that incorporates a range of traditional Thai and Northern Thai foods, and over a range of time periods.

The Thai massage and meditation lessons are also held at the Maekok River Village Resort.

Outdoor and Recreational Activities

OUTDOOR ACTIVITIES

We believe that students occasionally need a break from the rigours of 'pure' academic studies and therefore have developed a variety of activities for your students, which also allow them to develop different skills.

Basic enjoyment

Nature Studies

Students may take part in nature walks and flora and fauna studies, which are both educational and enjoyable. These activities allow students to learn about the diverse flora and fauna within Northern Thailand whilse appreciating the mountain scenery of the border area.

Bamboo Man Challenge

We can arrange a student version. The objective is to have students compete in a variety of outdoor skills sports and activities (e.g. swimming, abseiling and caving), so that they may enhance their enjoyment of the outdoors in a healthy, repsonsible and safe manner.

RECREATION

These facilties are available for students to enjoy in their free time.

Sports

  • Underwater hockey
  • Swimming
  • Beach volleyball and football

Full day or half day tours can be arranged to visit caves, hill tribes, handicraft markets and much more.

'Retail Therapy'

For those who relax by shopping, the gift shop at the resort sells jewellery, clothes, Thai style notebooks, bags and much more.

Traditional Thai dance shows can also be organised, along with competitions for any of the sports mentioned above.

Chiang Mai Facilities

These include:
