THE BAMBOO MAN CHALLENGES Introduction Adventure racing as a sport is well developed in the west. In recent years the sport has moved to Asia and is being promoted through Eco-Challenge competitions which can quite often be seen on television. Unfortunately,
these challenges are expensive to enter, requiring considerable
sponsorship funding and are designed for professional athletes.
We have therefore decided to introduce a range of Bamboo Man Challenges that are:
These 'one day' challenge courses are designed by Shane K Beary & Ekkaphan 'Otto' Hirancoop of Track of the Tiger Co. Ltd. Brief biographies highlighting their qualifications for the design task are provided under the 'staff' sub heading in the Corporate Development Facility section of our website. The Bamboo Man Challenges follow the same rough format as the professional competitions, but are more accurately described as 'action adventure decathalons' (the decathalon being the 10 discipline competition of Olympic fame). They are designed to allow both individuals and teams, regardless of age, or level of physical fitness, to test themselves both physically and mentally over a multi discipline adventure racing course. The
Bamboo Man Challenges cover 10 disciplines:
The Bamboo Man Challenges are open to 3 categories of competitor: Basic, Intermediate and Advanced. In addition, we have a non-competitive 'fun' or (sanook) category. There are both 'individual participant' (male or female) and 'mixed team' participants (4 members per team, one of whom must be female). The challenge entrance fees, on a sliding scale, are intended to be affordable to adults and students, both Thai and foreign. In addition to the entrance fee, participants (or their sponsors) are requested to submit to us a cheque (for any amount) in the name of any registered charity that operates in Thailand. Note: Details of many of the authorised local charities are available on the Bamboo Man Adventure Club section of our web site: www.track-of-the-tiger.com The 'fun' (sanook) category is for those who are not competing in the challenge itself, but would like to join the mountain bike, trail run, obstacle course, assault course, rock climbing wall abseil, and cargo net climb phases (Basic, Intermediate or Advanced) of the challenge programme. OUTLINES FOR EACH CATEGORY OF THE BAMBOO MAN CHALLENGES: SAFETY FEATURESTwo 4WD vehicles each crewed by one of our staff and a qualified nurse, and both equipped with suitable medical equipment & supplies are stationed at strategic points on the Eco-Challenge circuit. They are in radio communication with the base, Maekok River Village Resort, and with the two motorcycle outriders. Two outriders, on off road motorcycles, each carrying a qualified nurse with first aid kit, will patrol the challenge courses. They are in radio communication with the base, Maekok River Village Resort, and with the crews of the two 4WD vehicles. A
medical team of 2 or more nursing staff will support our own
waterborne safety personnel at the Huay Bon Dam.
Contingency plans have been drawn up for the emergency evacuation of casualties from any point on the challenge circuit, either to the Fang Hospital or Mae Ai hospitals, and from there to Chiang Mai, Chiang Rai, or Bangkok. |
