The canoes (
2 - 4 seater Canadian Indian Trading canoes), and canoeists
are trucked up to the military post on the Thai-Burma border.
Paddle some 25kms with the river flow, downstream through
the Fang valley to the Shan village of Ban Mae Mokcham (or
after a brief stop, a further 10km) to the Black Lahu village
of Ban Pha Tai. The vehicle collects both canoes and canoeists
from the pick up point at returns them to the resort.

Board one of
our customised bamboo rafts (seats 8) at the resort’s jetty
and depart down river. You are poled leisurely along by two
local raftsman supervised by your guide. The river meanders
through the valley passing lychee plantations, garlic fields
and rice paddy tended by colourfully clad farmers on either
bank. Canoes are carried along (if requested) and the guide
is trained in their use. A brief stop is made at the old tea
loading station of Ban Mae Saluk to allow you to answer the
call of nature. The raft is disassembled and loaded onto the
vehicle and you accompany it back to the resort.

Depart the resort
at 0800hrs on one of our custom build river barges, and travel
the Kok river under power through the Fang valley down to
Ban Jakhua. Those wishing to use the canoes set off ahead
whilst the rest of the group walks through the village, with
its hill tribe school, to a boat landing stage at the other
end. After an hour the canoes are secured alongside the barge
and you travel under power down to the head of the Nam Ten
(light) rapids where another one hour canoeing phase is started.
Those not canoeing relax onboard for a ‘rafting phase’ whilst
they are poled down river at a leisurely pace. A third canoeing
phase is commenced at the head of the Pha Kwang rapids, and
canoeists continue down to the Track of the Tiger River base
camp, followed by the barge in rafting mode.
After a picnic
lunch at the camp you reboard the barge and motor down river
through stunning scenery of bamboo clad banks to one of two
elephant riding camps to begin a 1.5hr elephant safari in
a loop through the surrounding jungle.
You disembark
the barge in the Karen village of Ban Ruam Mit and return
via the scenic road route to Ban Thaton and the Maekok River Village Resort.

Depart Ban Thaton
by vehicle to visit Shan & Akha villages. Board one of
our customised river barges in the Black Lahu village of Ban
Pha Tai and raft down river through stunning scenery. Enjoy
a picnic lunch at a shaded river bank spot and then continue
down river through one or two ‘light’ rapids. Canoes are carried
on board for those who wish to use them. On arriving at the
forestry research station, begin an (optional) mini trek of
1.5 hrs to a Musur Hill tribe village then onto our river
base camp for an overnight stop. Accommodation is in basic
bamboo bungalows overlooking the river. Proper mattresses,
bedding, pillows and mosquito nets are provided. Toilets,
in a separate block are European style and there are electric
hot water showers. Dinner is a BBQ meal served on linen clad
trestle tables followed by drinks (at guest expense) around
the campfire.
Day Two
Meal Code – (Breakfast, Lunch)
After a full
American breakfast, continue rafting down river through gorges
and past isolated hill tribe villages from which children
often cry out ‘hello’. The canoes are available for use if
requested and a stop is made at the hot springs. Take a 1.5
hr Elephant safari from a point on the river bank that takes
you through surrounding jungle, followed by lunch in a local
restaurant, before reboarding the river barge for the final
leg of the journey down to Chiang Rai boat jetty (arriving
app 1500 hrs.) Return by road via the scenic route to Ban
Thaton.
