CHUAY DUAY – COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT PROJECTS

Introduction
Many of those who are willing to provide assistance to the underprivileged would rather do so in a direct 'hands on' manner, ensuring that their contribution, be it financial or physical, really does go directly to those in need.

Over the course of the year, on selected weekends, public or school holidays, we will be offering those of you who wish to lend a helping hand , to join other like minded people in doing so.

Details of upcoming projects will be send to you, with as much forward notice as possible, through the Bamboo Man club newsletter.

The type of projects on which you will be able to work on are listed below, and we at Maekok River Village Resort & Track of the Tiger Tours will contribute our own services at cost when running these programmes.

Community Development Opportunities
Multi task survey and information gathering work for the Mae Ai Epidemiological Research Foundation.

As a side issue to the valuable survey of environmental conditions in app. 100 plus villages in the Mae Ai area, we will develop a prioritised list of potential community development related projects eligible for our attention.

Rural Engineering / Alternative Energy Projects
Installing water pipes, tanks and *hydraulic rams – *a system of using water pressure alone to lift water from lower to higher levels without the need for conventional electric or petrol fuelled pumps.

The design & construction of 'curing plants' that use either natural hot spring water, or a bamboo chippings smoker to cure both bamboo and thatch, increasing it's life span as a rural building material tenfold with obvious benefits to the environment and the localised economy.

Return to Organic Farming Projects:
The Maekok River Village Resort is running a series of 3 month organic farming courses for the senior students of the Ratchapachanugrop 30 school for orphans, Mae Ai. The school is home to feeds some 700 orphaned children on minimal budget. Our objectives are:

  • To train those leaving the school next year in organic farming methods thus making them eligible for employment on higher than average day rates within the ever increasing network of organic farms in northern Thailand.

  • To provide the orphanage school with a steady supply of free fresh vegetables of a high standard.

  • To introduce micro-organic farming projects to the rural village, e.g. Vermicomposting – using earthworms fed on organic waste to produce top grade compost and liquid fertilizer, that can be sold, or used by the villagers in the production of out of season vegetables, flowers or fruits or grown in 'temperature friendly' containers such as disused car tyres.

You may wish to lend a hand supervising these courses.

Rural Community Development Projects:

Providing old clothes, toys, children's books, and spending some time with the children (aged 1 – 3) of the Mae Ai hospital orphanage.

Joining the hospital staff & Track of the Tiger staff on one of their frequent 4WD general health clinics to the more remote hill tribe villages. You go along in the capacity of unofficial ambassador, and donate whatever you want, blankets, clothing, etc.
