Free-Wheeler Tours

Design your own itinerary in and around Chiang Mai.

Introduction

The ‘Free Wheeler’ tour system covers 7 different tour routes that radiate out from Chiang Mai City into the surrounding provincial areas.

In the description of each route we have listed (in numerical order) the various attractions and places of interest.

This approach allows you to select those activities or attractions that interest you, and decide, either beforehand or whilst on tour, which of them you wish to include in your own tour itinerary.

You select as many as you want, and determine  how much time you wish to spend at which attraction. You also choose where and what you wish to eat. In effect, you are the tour leader, the guide is there to assist, interpret and explain.

Essentially, you pay for the services of vehicle, driver and guide on hire from 0800 to 1800 hrs.

Some of the routes can be explored in half a day, leaving you the afternoon to explore another half-day route (no extra charge, it is all within the one day).

The ‘Free Wheeler’ itineraries are written in such a way that you may do them ‘on your own’ with a hired jeep or motorcycle (details of motorcycle and car hire are provided later on in this section).

In deciding whether to ‘Do It Yourself’ or use our ‘Free Wheeler’ system, evaluate carefully the cost of transport, time spent looking for things, language difficulties, guide knowledge etc. in comparison with the cost and obvious benefits of the ‘Free Wheeler’ system.

Acknowledgement

In putting together the various routes I have drawn heavily on information provided in “Exploring Chiang Mai - City, Valley & Mountains”, by Oliver Hargreave (published by Within Books). These routes, and the maps for them, can be found in this book, available in Chiang Mai bookshops, or from our Chiang Mai manager . It is, in my  opinion, the best guide (& general information) book currently available on the Chiang Mai area.

If exploring any of these routes on you own, without a guide, I strongly recommend that you arm yourself with:

  • The above mentioned guide book.
  • The B & B (Berndston & Berndston) Thailand North road map (the most accurate and up-to-date map of these parts currently available.
