The
Location
The Lodge is located 173kms (3 hrs) north of Chiang Mai, and 90kms
(1.5 hrs) from Chiang Rai on the banks of the Maekok River, in the
Thai-Burma border village of Ban Thaton.
Ban Thaton is the traditional
halfway point on the north's most popular tourist route that runs
between Chiang Mai - The Golden Triangle & Chiang Rai. It is
also the boarding point for the well-established long tailed boat
/ bamboo raft / river barge & canoe trips between Ban Thaton
& Chiang Rai.
Ban Thaton is at the
north end of the very fertile Fang valley, rich in a wide variety
of agricultural crops. It is at 512 metres above sea level, and
at the base of the border mountain range, with peaks up to 1900
m.a.s.l.
Climatically, it is invariably
some 3 -5 degrees cooler than Chiang Mai or Chiang Rai climate (please
see our tourist
information handbook).
The
Lodge
The Lodge itself is Thai style in design and constructed from Gold
teak and other strictly local materials. It is set on the riverbank
in an old lychee and palm plantation.
During construction,
rather than cut down palm trees, they were where possible allowed
to grow through the roofs.
The bar, restaurant and
terrace are right on the water's edge.
The
Accommodation
There are 27 guestrooms, in either a single / twin / or double-bedded
format, and 1 'honeymoon suite' completed with classic four poster
double bed. All
rooms are fan-cooled, have gas-fired hot water shower systems, and
European style toilets. The rooms are rustic and fairly small (they
do not allow for an extra bed) but are comfortable and fitted with
high quality orthopaedic mattresses giving you the option of a 'hard'
or 'soft' side. The combination of the Thai-style design and the
temperate climate alleviate the need for air-conditioning. Even
in the hottest months, fans provide adequate cooling.

The
Sala Siam Restaurant
The Sala Siam restaurant overlooks the river and has an enviable
reputation for Thai food (commented on in most guidebooks). The
well-explained 100+ dish menu (Thai & Western food) encourages
you to 'try something different':

The
Long Tale Bar
Uncommon for the provincial areas, the bar is well-stocked with
beer, spirits, wines and cocktails, and it stays open until late
(as one might expect where the management is Irish).

Customer
Friendly Policies
- We do not levy service
charges on anything (rooms, food & drink, tours, etc). We
would prefer that you tip the staff as you see fit.
- There are no surcharges
on room rates for peak season or public holidays.
- There are no compulsory
Gala Dinner surcharges.
- Realistic service
fee on telephone calls. (no surcharge on domestic calls, Baht
50.- only on international calls).
- There are no charges
for late check out - late check out being subject to room availability.
- There are no charges
for fax or email messages in.

Family
Tour Bargains
All Track of the Tiger Tour programmes listed on the internet have
'Micro group' (3 to 8 people in a group) price tables. Our Family
Tour Bargains option allows you to post a notice online in the hope
of linking up with another family seeking the same tour at the same
time, in order that the two (or more) families (or groups of friends)
may take advantage of the considerable tour price reductions available
to those booking as 'micro groups'.
