The
River Base Camp
On
the Maekok River, halfway between Ban Thaton and Chiang Rai.
This African Safari-style
river base camp is set on the riverbank in a narrow picturesque
gorge 50 kilometres down river from Maekok River Lodge. In terms
of comfort, it is more like a clean guesthouse than a camp, although
great care has been taken to maintain the ‘camp’ atmosphere.
Accommodation
There
are currently 5 riverfront bamboo bungalows of good standard and
a 4-room traditional raised Thai-style house.

Incentive or
Large Groups - A two-story Thai-style pavilion sleeps up to
60 people.
Accommodation
Equipment Inventory - Each bungalow or room is equipped with
either 1 or 2 fully sprung mattresses, a mosquito net, sleeping
bags, (sheets for warm weather), pillows, towels and soap.
Bathrooms
& Toilets - A wood-fired hot water boiler supplies water
to ‘mandies’ (large rectangular basins) from which hot water is
ladled over one’s body prior to and after soaping down. Standard
cold water showers are also available and bathrooms are equipped
with a Thai style toilet, washbasin, mirror and towel rails.
Power & Lighting
Supply - The camp is supplied with electricity backed up by
kerosene oil lamp lighting.
Restaurant -
White Linen covered trestle tables and folding chairs are
set up in a concrete floored restaurant area on the covered, but
open-sided, ground floor of the 4-room Thai style house. Meals are
served from a conventional buffet table station with waiters providing
support service.
Kitchen -
A full military-style field kitchen produces meals as dictated by
our tour programmes, but can produce most meal requirements if advance
notice is given. A chef from Maekok River Village Resort joins each tour
departure to ensure that our high standards of food preparation
are adhered to.
Bar Service
- Standard and comprehensive bar service is available, with drink
requirements being discussed with guests or client tour operators
prior to tour departures (to be prepared!).
BBQ - Most
evening meals produced for our river tours are of the Thai / European
BBQ type. Care is taken to provide more, rather than less,
food because of the remote location.
Campfire
- A campfire surrounded by folding seats is lit every evening so
that guests may enjoy each others company in these extremely relaxed
surroundings, where the almost deafening quiet of a jungle night
washes away the stress of city living.
