Itinerary:
Day One.
After an early
breakfast set off by 4WD for a 3 hour drive along difficult little
used roads to a forestry station half way up Doi Pahom Phog. Enjoy
a picnic lunch at the forestry base station station before setting
off on foot, with a team consisting of our guide, a forest ranger
and a number of porters. You ascend through virgin forest along
trails linking forestry sub stations.
At a given band
of altitude you find numerous species of little known and brighly
coloured high altitude flowers. Further up, at 1500 metres above
sea level you enter dense and damp evergreen forest, cool all year
around, and with rocks covered in lichen and moss.
Sunlight rarely
penetrates here and fern is abundant. Rare plants, Fagacaeg, Lauracaeg,
Ericacaeg are found. Higher still you find Acanthacaeg, very rare
and a good source of food for animals and humans alike. You overnight
at a camp area.
Day Two.
After breakfast,
set off for the windswept plateau at 2856 metres above sea
level, the top of Doi Pahom Phog. Rest awhile, enjoy the views,
and then begin the descent along another equally beautiful trail.
The area is fantastic for bird watching, and for viewing a wide
range of flora. Many of the tress are not normally native to Thailand,
their seeds having blown in from Burma, India and China.
Lunch on the
way down at one of the forestry sub stations, then continue your
descent until you reach a lower forestry sub station where you board
your 4WD vehicle for the journey back to the resort.
