Full Day 4WD Tour – Across the Wawee & Doi Chang Ranges
Degree of difficulty: Medium-Hard
Meal Code: (L)
Depart the resort by 4WD vehicle and head down river via Ban Mae Mok Cham and Ban Mae Saluk up into the Wawee range. Visit a Yao village and then travel on to the village of Wawee. Wawee is a fascinating place, home to 8 or 9 different ethnic groups and run by ex-Kuomingtong Chinese refugees. Until recently, the remote location and treacherously narrow access roads that hugged the steep mountain side made it difficult to reach. Travel down the surfaced road on the Mae Suay side and then turn off onto a narrow rutted track that climbs steeply and leads you up to a Lisu hill tribe village at the top of the beautiful Doi Chang. On the way up, stop off at a seldom visited Akha village (outside the few people on our tour, they see less than 4 foreigners per year).

On reaching the top we take a picnic lunch in the village and then follow one of two forestry roads (dictated by road conditions and guest preference). We travel through a wide range of flora, stopping at one or two isolated villages en route, and then on to the main Chiang Rai – Mae Suay road. Return to Wawee along the new hard surfaced road. Taking this route allows a stop for tea at the tea plantation and a chance to enjoy the late afternoon views of this beautiful area. Return the 20km downhill to Ban Mae Saluk, the old tea loading station, and on to the resort.
