Volunteering in Chiang Mai

Introduction

Volunteering or voluntourism (the latter where one combines a few days of volunteer work into a holiday) has become a boom market in tourism. If approached correctly the rewards for both the volunteer and the recipient community are phenomenal. The key is lies in ensuring that::

(a) The model used ensures that a very low percentage (if any) of the volunteer’s

are used for administration or office overheads.

(b) The project is of genuine match for the needs of the community and their long term goals.

(c) The project provides them with both short and long term benefits.

(d) The role of the volunteer is essential, important, rewarding and allows for a high degree of cross cultural integration.
